Kelly Preston Speaks on Late Son's Health Issues

In 2009, Kelly Preston and husband John Travolta's 16-year-old son Jett passed away from a seizure while the family was vacationing in the Bahamas. Now, the actress is speaking out about her late son's ongoing medical conditions that are assumed to have played a role in his passing.

Preston sat down for an exclusive interview with Jim Sears and Travis Stork from The Doctors to discuss the autism and Kawasaki disease that her son suffered with, and hypothesized where those disorders may have originated from.

"[Jett] was autistic and he had seizures, and when he was very young, he had Kawasaki syndrome," she says. "I talked to all of the parents in ICU once he was out of the woods and they had a questionnaire...and everybody answered that...they had had their carpets cleaned recently...Through these different things, I strongly believe as a mother, as does my husband, that there are certain contributing factors that lead to autism."

In her efforts to raise awareness about the effects of chemicals in consumer products and pesticides in foods, Preston also utilized her visit to The Doctors to encourage the health benefits of an organic lifestyle. As she reflected back on her own lifestyle during her pregnancy with Jett, she highlighted potential contributing factors to his diseases.

Preston recalled having food poisoning when she was five months pregnant with her son and also attributes her "fast and hard" labor, which consequently led to her consuming antibiotics while breastfeeding, to his autism and seizures.

"I'm not saying that you can't have antibiotics when you're breastfeeding, but it gave him thrush (a yeast infection that typically occurs in the mouth), which can cause...leaky gut," she speculates. "There were certain other contributing factors--plus the Kawasaki--that I believe absolutely is why he had autism and also why he had seizures."

Preston has two other children with Travolta, one of whom will soon be celebrating his second birthday. Her interview with The Doctors will air on Wednesday. Check your local listings.
