Katy Perry Gets Candid on Depression

Katy Perry dropped a bomb to Billboard when she revealed she was plagued by suicidal thoughts after her breakup with Russell Brand. Now she's opened up to ET's Rob Marciano about how she overcame her darkest days.

Brand reportedly ended the couple's 14-month marriage via text message, leaving Perry to wonder if life was still worth living.

Perry, 28, revealed that she came out of a "small depression" by writing her latest album, Prism, out October 22.

"I think there was just a higher energy -- a higher power -- that helped pushing me in the right direction," said Perry.

One of the songs on the new album, By the Grace of God, depicts the pop star as a vulnerable figure -- lying on a bathroom floor and deciding to keep going.

The lyrics of By the Grace of God reveal another key component in bringing Perry out of despondence -- her sister Angela.

"I thank my sister for keeping my head above the water // when the truth was like swallowing sand," Perry sings.

Today, Perry is happy and healthy with boyfriend John Mayer.
