Scottish singer Susan Boyle has revealed that she has Asperger syndrome.

Boyle told the Observer that she discovered that she had the disorder, a form of autism, after seeing a doctor a year ago but has kept it a secret until now.

"I went to seek a diagnosis from a Scottish specialist. Nobody told me to," she revealed to the Observer. "I thought I had a more serious illness and couldn't function properly."

The 52-year-old Britain's Got Talent alum says that she is relieved by the diagnosis because she was misdiagnosed with brain damage as a child.

"I was told I had brain damage. I always knew it was an unfair label. Now I have a clearer understanding of what's wrong and I feel relieved and a bit more relaxed about myself," Boyle said.

Boyle, who recently released her fifth studio album and second Christmas album Home for Christmas, says the disorder won't alter her life but hopes it will help others better understand her.

"It will not make any difference to my life. It's just a condition that I have to live with and work through. ... I think people will treat me better because they will have a much greater understanding of who I am and why I do the things I do," she said.
