An autopsy by the New York City Medical Examiner released Wednesday, March 19, 2014, has determined that the cause of death of Mick Jagger's girlfriend, designer L'Wren Scott, is hanging by suicide.

The body of the 49-year-old model and designer was discovered inside her New York City apartment Monday morning, WABC-TV reports.

Scott has been together with longtime Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger since 2001. A spokesperson for Jagger, who has been on tour in Australia, said he was "completely shocked and devastated by the news."

Scott -- who was adopted by Mormon parents and raised in Utah -- had her own fashion line that was popular with many celebrities including Madonna, Nicole Kidman, Oprah Winfrey, Sarah Jessica Parker and Angelina Jolie.

"This is a horrible and tragic loss," Madonna said in a statement. "I'm so upset. I loved L'Wren's work and she was always so generous with me." A spokesperson for Kidman said the actress was "heartbroken and in shock" over L'Wren's death.
