According to Sgt. Gregory Williams of New Jersey State Police who spoke to ET, the 45-year-old comedian was a passenger in a limo bus when the accident occurred in Cranbury Township at 1 a.m. on the turnpike. In a preliminary assessment, Williams said it appears that one of the tractor trailers may have rear-ended the limo, but police don't believe drugs or alcohol were involved. Seven people were in the limo bus, and the two people in the front seat were fine. The five passengers in the backseat (including Morgan) were rushed to the hospital, but one of those five was killed.

Peter Haigney, a spokesman for the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, confirmed that one of the patients in critical condition is named Tracy Morgan. Three of the passengers are in critical condition and one is in fair condition. Comics Ardie Fuqua and Harris Stanton are among those hospitalized following the accident. Sadly, James McNair, sometimes known as Jimmy Mack in the comedy circuit (see his stand-up below), was killed.

Morgan's rep told ET in a statement: "Tracy remains in critical condition at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital. He sustained these injuries in an accident that occurred early this morning as one of several passengers in a chauffeured SUV returning from a tour date in Delaware. His family is now with him and he is receiving excellent care. We don't anticipate much of a change in his condition today but will provide a further update once more information becomes available."

On Friday night, Morgan was performing at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover, Delaware.

A truck driver from Georgia was charged on Saturday for causing the multi-vehicle accident. Kevin Roper, 35, is charged with one count of death by auto and four counts of assault by auto after the tractor-trailer he was driving crashed into the van, a 2012 Mercedes Sprinter. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. According to CNN, Roper turned himself in and posted a $50,000 bail.

UPDATE:
According to Morgan's rep, the actor will remain in the hospital for several weeks. "While Tracy remains in critical condition, he has been more responsive today, which is an incredibly encouraging sign," said rep Lewis Kay on Sunday (via The Hollywood Reporter). "He sustained a number of injuries including a broken leg, a broken femur, a broken nose and several broken ribs. He had surgery earlier today on his leg. We expect him to remain in the hospital for several weeks. His family is tremendously overwhelmed and appreciative of the outpouring of love and support from his fans."

Upon hearing the news of Morgan, celebrities have taken to Twitter to send out thoughts and prayers to the Saturday Night Live alum.
