11 Times Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale Got Real About Their Marriage and Kids

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale are calling it quits after 13 years of marriage.

The couple, who share three sons, 9-year-old Kingston, 6-year-old Zuma, and 1-year-old Apollo, released a joint statement on Monday announcing their divorce. "While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment," they said in a statement to ET.

The couple has been dodging rumors about their troubled marriage for some time and have never been shy about candidly discussing the challenges they've faced. Here's a look at a few times Gwen and Gavin got real about their relationship over the last few years.

1. When Gwen opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about their marital ups and downs.

Sitting down with Ellen, the No Doubt singer talked about the "cycles" she and Gavin go to in their marriage.

"Like everybody else we go through our cycles of being so happy and then being like, 'Oh my gosh.' And then being so happy it's crazy," Gwen explained in the November 2014 chat. "I mean I can't believe that I've known him as long as I have and we still have fun together. He left today to go on a week tour and he hasn't been doing that for a while. It feels weird. Like, 'Oh my gosh, when I go home I'm actually going to go right to sleep.' It's weird. It's crazy to have the little bit of freedom, but I'll miss him."

2. When Gwen talked about wanting to "disappear" from the stress of her family.

During that same interview with Ellen, Gwen talked about how insane life gets with three young boys in the house.

"It gets crazy," Gwen shared. "Everybody knows that 4-8 at night is like chaos. It's like the crazy time in our house. The other day we were driving home and I was thinking, 'OK Motel 6. If I can just find one and go there and disappear -- disappear from my life.' But no, they're incredible."

3. When Gavin revealed the unconventional way Gwen told him she was pregnant.

Speaking with Howard Stern on his satellite radio show in September 2014, Gavin recounted the unusual way Gwen revealed that they would be having
another baby.

"I got this email on the road from Gwen and the title was in capitals, LOOK WHAT YOU DID TO ME NOW!" Gavin recalled. "I was like, 'What is this?' My blood pressure went through the roof, and I opened the email and it was the pregnancy stick."

4. When Gavin got candid about how the couple conceived when he was on the road a lot.

Gavin is often traveling and performing with his band Bush. But the rocker shared quite a bit of info with Stern, explaining in the September 2014 Interview, "I wasn’t home often but I got home on Father's Day and that gave Father's Day a new meaning."

5. When Gwen gushed about landing a "hot guy."

According to the gorgeous singer, she didn't imagine herself ending up with someone as attractive as Gavin.

"I never really saw myself landing a guy that hot. I don't know if I was a nerd in high school, but I definitely wasn't the super-cute cheerleader so I never saw myself getting somebody like that," Gwen said in a March 2015 interview with Cosmopolitan. "I do think he's quite handsome. It's not the most important thing about him, but it is nice...and he makes really cute babies!"

6. When Gwen admitted that it was "a miracle" that they managed to stay together for so long.

In that same interview with Cosmopolitan, Gwen admitted that it's been difficult to be apart so often, explaining, "We go through so much together—it's a miracle that we could stay together this long. [Gavin's] on a short tour right now, and he wrote me the sweetest note this morning. It's good to have those days when we both do our own things. I think that's what keeps relationships going, when both people can be themselves and have their own individuality. That's especially important for women—it's hard to find time for yourself."

7. When Gavin joined Gwen on The Voice.

During Gwen Stefani's first year as a coach on The Voice, she enlisted Gavin's help, bringing him onto the show as a mentor for the singers on her team. Gwen seemed super excited to be working with her husband, sharing a pic of them on set in July 2014, which she captioned, "It's official! so excited to have @GavinRossdale on #TeamGwen!"

8. When Gwen called her youngest son her "miracle" baby.

It's obvious that Gwen loves her kids, but that doesn't mean she always planned on having three. In September 2014, Gwen sat down with Seth Meyers on Late Night, and explained how it was actually her oldest son who is responsible for the couple having another kid.

"[Kingston] really has, like, a direct link to God," Gwen explained. "He asked me, 'Mom are you going to have a baby? I want you to have a baby.' And I'm like, 'No, it's over, we're not having any more. This is our family.'"

Then, Gwen shared, after Kingston "prayed every night," Gwen found out she was pregnant four weeks later.

9. When Gwen shared the sweetest father-son pic of all time on Instagram.

In June 2014, Gwen snapped a pic of her newborn baby Apollo being held by Gavin, faces pressed together, which she captioned, "I always thought you'd be a good dad" #simplekindoflife #iwasright #happyfathersday.

10. When Gwen talked about "wanting" to be a good couple.

Speaking with Today in January, Gwen said that she and Gavin made their relationship work because they "want" to.

"We both want to be married, and we both want to be good parents," Gwen shared. "So, I feel really proud of what we've done together."

11. Every time they denied rumors that they were on their way to getting a divorce.

Both Gwen and Gavin have vehemently denied that their marriage was in trouble and when asked about rumors that the couple were on the verge of splitting, both of them said that the reports were totally wrong.

Gavin slammed a report in OK Magazine, around the time of their 12th anniversary, saying that their relationship was on the rocks, telling Howard Stern in September 2014, "It's so mean spirited… I curse that magazine and that girl that wrote that."

In an interview with ET in July, Gwen also responded to claims that she and Gavin were headed for divorce, saying, "No, that's crazy."
