Justin Bieber Scores First No. 1 Hit With 'What Do You Mean?'
By Sophie Schillaci
Justin Bieber, you have arrived.
It's been six years since the then-15-year-old burst on the scene with his debut single, "One Time," and today, Bieber has just landed his first ever No. 1 hit with his emotionally raw "What Do You Mean?"
Believe it or not, Bieber's formerly highest-charting song was not even "Baby," which peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2010, but his polarizing 2012 release, "Boyfriend." (No. 1 at the time? fun.'s "We Are Young.") Bieber made a return to the Hot 100's top ten earlier this summer with the surprise Skrillex and Diplo collaboration, "Where Are U Now," which hit No. 8 back in July.
"What Do You Mean?" marks not only a milestone for Bieber himself -- who is also credited as a producer and writer on the track -- but for the Billboard Hot 100 as a whole. The 21-year-old has become the youngest male artist to debut at No. 1 in the chart's 57-year-history, while the song itself is the 23rd to ever debut atop the Hot 100.
The Biebs is clearly excited about his latest career achievement, taking to Instagram to thank his fans. "Looks like we did it!" he tells the camera. "Finally. I want to say we did it again, but it's my first No. 1 so, thank you guys, you guys are the best."
"What Do You Mean?" has drawn critical acclaim since JB released the song on Aug. 28, thanks in large part to the strikingly honest lyrics, with the singer pouring his vulnerability into his vocals. Bieber upped the ante at the MTV Video Music Awards with a tearful (we're talking full-blown sobbing) performance, paired with a heartbreaking media blitz.
In his latest interview, Bieber told Australian radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O that "I got my heart broken, so I'm just trying to let that heal up."
…But really, he seems to be doing just fine. Just a few days ago, Bieber rolled up to a New York City club literally surrounded by beautiful models. See the moment in the video below.
