What a difference a year makes!

On Friday at midnight, Zayn Malik dropped his first solo studio album, Mind of Mine, on what just so happens to be the one-year anniversary of when he announced he was leaving One Direction.

"It just happens to coincide," the 23-year-old singer told Westwood One's   Zach Sang and the Gang radio show back in February. "Maybe it's a sign."

In addition to the release of his album, Malik also debuted the music video for his song, "BeFoUr", and performed "Like I Would" on Thursday's Tonight Show   with the program's house band, The Roots. In the video, Malik is seen hanging out with a group of friends at different urban hot spots.

Fans have been super supportive of Malik going solo, with one tweet reading: "A year ago today, Zayn made a million fans cry. A year later he comes back making millions of fans proud #MindofMine."

"I think in any field of work when you lose someone on your team, obviously it's hard, but the positive take on the situation is we felt we definitely got closer as a group," Louis Tomlinson told ET in November   of Malik's departure from One Direction. "Zayn did have different musical tastes, so that's fine."
