Nick Jonas is getting "really real."

The 23-year-old "Close" singer opens up about the day he and ex-girlfriend Olivia Culpo called it quits, and why he's filled with "regret" over his teen years with the Jonas Brothers in a new docu-series filmed by his friend and Kingdom co-star, Jonathan Tucker. Last Year Was Complicated, which shares a title with his upcoming album, is streaming now on TIDAL.

"There's no better release for me than creating. I just had to do it, I had that instinct," Jonas says of the new album.

Referencing his ex, he continues: "The minute she left, I was alone in my apartment. I was like, 'I have to come and get out of the city and write.'"

Jonas says he created much of his sophomore album in Mammoth Mountain, where the docu-series was also filmed.

"I came up here with my trusted group of collaborators," he says. "Immediately I was OK. I've tried talking to people and doing that thing, but I don't know. [I'm] too in my head and unwilling to open up and get deeper. I feel like the music is the best therapist I've ever had."

Jonas gets equally candid about his time working as a band with brothers Kevin and Joe Jonas -- and the JoBros' 2013 split.

"Towards the end, there was just so much bias towards the brothers and the band. It's funny, it was meant to happen that it ended, but there were probably some family issues that needed to be sorted out," he says. "I, at some point, need to be able to look at it with a positive angle because it does suck that my 13- to 20-year-old years are like, come with a lot of regret, almost. In a way. That's getting really real."

Jonas will release his next solo album on June 10 and will embark on the Future Now Tour this summer with longtime pal Demi Lovato. Meanwhile, romance rumors continue to follow his every move. He's been linked to both Kate Hudson and Lily Collins in recent months, but maintains that he's still "single y'all."

"I'm very single y'all. That is all," he tweeted on May 27. "Hate when liberties are taken for headlines."

Culpo, who split from the singer in June 2015, seems to have moved on with a new man: New England Patriots star Danny Amendola. "The two have been dating for a few months," a source confirmed to ET.

The duo first sparked dating rumors in February, when the pageant beauty shared a photo on her Instagram page rocking head-to-toe Pats gear. In April, they were spotted holding hands at the Coachella Music Festival in Indio, California.

Earlier this week, Culpo shared a sweet video of Amendola dipping her high above the Las Vegas skyline.
