Football is a very big deal in Kate Mara's family.

The House of Cards star, who is related to the owners of the New York Giants and the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL teams, confessed in a recent Conan interview that she actually had to end a past relationship with a guy who inadvertently damaged the highest professional football honor -- the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

"Somehow I end up dating a lot of Englishmen," the 33-year-old actress revealed to host Conan O'Brien on Monday's show. "They like soccer, not football."

While Mara admitted that her current boyfriend, Jamie Bell, "is amazing" and even spent a night watching past Giants games to be able to keep up with her, she does have a past flame who was not so eager to learn.

"I was dating someone a long time ago who came to visit my parents, not too long after the Giants won the Super Bowl," she explained, not clarifying whether she was referring to the team's '07 or '11 victory. "My mom specifically was very excited about this, and she said, 'Would you like to see it? Would you like to hold it?"

"He was a very enthusiastic man," she continued. "He went to lift up the trophy, but he lifted it up from the base, which we didn't know wasn't connected to the trophy."

"It fell, and in slow motion I saw he was wearing these steel-toed boots. "He kicked his foot up... and caught it in his hands. And he dented just a tiny part."

"I look over at my dad who's in the kitchen just watching the whole thing happen," she shared, before hilariously recalling her father's disapproving stare.
