Stars Mourn Sam Shepard's Death at 73 -- See Linda Cardelini, Ava DuVernay and More Stars' Touching Posts

Sam Shepard was beloved on both the page and the screen.

After news of the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Oscar-nominated actor's death at age 73 following a battle with ALS, broke on Monday, many stars and those close to Shepard took to Twitter to mourn and offer touching condolences.

Linda Cardelini, who starred along Shepard on Netflix's Bloodline, took to Instagram, writing, "Such sad news. It was a privilege/dream come true to have worked with the incredible and legendary Sam Shepard on Bloodline. My condolences to all who love him. He will be missed."

Ava DuVernay recognized Shepard's prolific career, writing, "Whenever he came on-screen, you knew you were in good hands. A frame from Days of Heaven. May he rest in love."

Rainn Wilson acknowledged Shepard as a "cowboy poet dramatist of the American family shadow. A legend."

George Takei invoked Shepard's Oscar-nominated role, writing, "Sam Shepard was a towering figure in American theater and film. He indeed had 'the right stuff.' His voice will truly be missed."

Marc Maron tweeted, "RIP Sam Shepard. Ride on, genius."

Don Cheadle shared a memory of meeting the accomplished artist, writing, "Literally bumped into Sam Shepard many years ago, both of us on our way to see Pillow Man on Broadway. We had a great chat/walk. #hero RIP."

Broadway star Corey Cott tweeted, "We lost a true legend today. One that created characters and stories beyond genius. RIP Sam Shepard. Truly one of the best."
