2013 Tonys: NPH Dazzles, Lauper Wins for Debut

The 67th Annual Tony Awards dazzled and delighted from beginning to end in New York's City Radio City Music Hall on Sunday.

The show, broadcast on CBS, commenced with an extravagant opening number from fourth-time host Neil Patrick Harris, which rendered an extensive standing ovation from the audience.

During the number, Harris guaranteed a "truly legendary show," was joined by one-man-show Mike Tyson, and sarcastically thanked Shia LaBeouf for allowing him to host.

After uniting with him on stage, How I Met Your Mother actor poked fun at the former undisputed heavyweight boxing champion frequently throughout the show, joking that he was giving the cast of Matilda The Musical face tattoos backstage amongst other quips.

Although Harris was on-point the entire show, from French kissing a dog to his closing-number rap, the show was ultimately about the awards—and moreover, the musical performances.

Among the many snazzy performances were musical numbers from the casts of Matilda The Musical, Bring It On: The Musical, Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella, Motown The Musical, Annie, A Christmas Story: The Musical, Pippin, and Kinky Boots.

The night's biggest winner was Kinky Boots, a musical based on the tale of a shoemaker and his drag queen business partner, which was presented with six awards, including Best Musical.

Amid Kinky Boots' many awards, which also included a Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for Billy Porter, was the Best Original Score Award for Cyndi Lauper, her first ever Tony.

While Lauper won a Tony for her Broadway debut, fellow Hollywood celebrity Tom Hanks didn't have the same fate, as he left empty-handed for his Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play nomination for Lucky Guy.

Also receiving a bulk of the awards in addition to Kinky Boots were Pippin (four awards), which won Best Revival of a Musical, and Matilda The Musical (four awards), which nabbed Best Book of a Musical.

Winning this year's Best Play award was the acclaimed comedy Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.
