HBO's 'True Detective' Debuts With Huge Ratings

HBO has a hit on their hands with the new crime thriller miniseries True Detective. The show, starring Golden Globe winner Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, premiered on Sunday, Jan. 12,  with the best debut ratings for any HBO show since Boardwalk Empire's first episode in 2010.

The show drew 2.3 million viewers, according to Variety, beating the debuts of such beloved shows as Game of Thrones, with 2.2 million viewers for its premiere, and The Newsroom, which scored 2.14 million. Boardwalk Empire's debut in 2010 snagged 4.8 million.

Harrelson and McConaughey star as a pair of homicide detectives in Louisiana who are hunting for a serial killer that spans many years.

airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
