Law and Order
, CSI and countless procedurals have been ripping their plots from real life for years, but Sundance is going beyond the headlines to tell the true story of Michael Peterson in The Staircase: Last Chance.

Originally presented as a French miniseries, The Staircase chronicled Peterson's murder trial stemming from the 2001 death of his wife, Kathleen, who'd died after falling down a flight of stairs. Authorities didn't believe Peterson's claims that she fell while drunk, instead choosing to prosecute on the assumption he had bludgeoned her to death.

Now, eight years after his conviction, two new installments of The Staircase have been produced, focusing on Peterson's last chance appeal and ETonline scored an exclusive clip from Chapter 9 as Peterson heads to his first re-trial hearing.

The Staircase: Last Chance
premieres March 4 at 10 p.m. on Sundance.
