"It was a very difficult decision," HBO said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. "We've decided not to continue Enlightened for a third season. We're proud of the show and we look forward to working with [co-creators] Mike White and Laura Dern in the future."

The half-hour dark comedy series followed self-destructive executive Amy Jellicoe (Dern), who attempts to pick up the pieces of her life after rehab.

After the initial success of season one, which earned Dern a Golden Globe, the show has been outshined by other HBO shows such as Girls and Veep.

HBO is reportedly working on four comedy pilots -- which include shows from Lorne Michaels (People in New Jersey) and Mike Judge (Silicon Valley) -- in addition to prepping for the May premiere of Christopher Guest's comedy Family Tree.
