Not sure what to record on your DVR in the New Year?

We've put together a preview of the hottest new and returning series, along with upcoming awards shows, to look out for in 2014.

NBC's cult favorite Community returns with a special one-hour fifth season premiere on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 8 p.m. ET. The episode will mark the return of creator Dan Harmon to the fold as the comedy's re-instated showrunner.

CBS has a new series set to debut, Intelligence, about a cybernetically-enhanced government operative, airing on Jan. 7 at 9 p.m. ET.
HBO will be premiering two new original series, True Detective, starring Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey, airing on Jan. 12, along with the gay-themed Looking, making its debut on Jan. 19.

January marks the return of one of television's most acclaimed drama series, the Emmy-winning Downton Abbey. This season picks up following the shocking death of Matthew Crawley (Dan Stevens) in the third season finale, as Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) now finds herself with several new love interests.

"There are a few potential suitors, there's two main ones," Dockery told E! News. "The new boys coming into the show, they're brave because I'm cursed. Mary is cursed isn't she? Because they all die."

The Downton Abbey season 4 premiere will air Sunday, Jan. 5, at 9 p.m. ET on PBS.

Also on PBS, expect to see Benedict Cumberbatch reprise his role as the brilliant detective in Sherlock on Jan. 19 at 10 p.m. ET.

Several premium cable favorites are also soon coming back to the airwaves. Showtime hits Shameless, House of Lies and Episodes all have season premieres scheduled to air on Sunday, Jan. 12, the same day HBO's Girls returns.

New episodes of Fox's New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine will air on Sunday, Feb. 2, immediately following Super Bowl XLVIII in the coveted post-game timeslot. Other returning series to look out for include AMC's The Walking Dead on Feb. 9, Netflix's House of Cards on Feb. 14, Fox's Glee on Feb. 25 and ABC's Nashville on Feb. 26.

This being awards season, there's also several high-profile ceremonies on the horizon. The 2014 People's Choice Awards airs Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Sandra Bullock and Katy Perry are leading the list of nominees with five nods each.

The 56th Grammy Awards will also air on CBS, on Sunday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. ET. LL Cool J will serve as host. Daft Punk, Kendrick Lamar with Imagine Dragons, Pink and Nate Ruess are expected to perform.

And then, of course, there's the biggest awards show of them all -- the Oscars. The 86th Academy Awards will be broadcast Sunday, March 2, on ABC. Some of the films predicted to win big this year include 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle.
