We named star Gina Rodriguez as our "it" breakout star of the season, not only for what she has done but also for what she hasn't done.

The 29-year-old Latin actress turned down Lifetime's Devious Maids because of a role that she thought could perpetuate stereotypes.

"There's a perception I had growing up about myself, because of the industry and because of the media, and I want to change that perception for other little girls and boys," said Gina.

In Jane the Virgin, Gina plays Jane, a 23-year-old virgin engaged to be married. Before her big day, Jane gets some big news -- she's pregnant. Although she's been celibate her entire life, she was accidentally artificially inseminated by her doctor during a routine check-up.

"Money comes and goes," Gina said of her career decisions. "I grew up with very humble beginnings. I learned at a really young age that money doesn't make me who I am. Driving nice cars and wearing fancy clothes doesn't make Gina awesome. Gina can make Gina awesome."

Jane the Virgin premieres October 13 at 9/8c on The CW.
