From Janet's wardrobe malfunction to Prince's risque pantomime, the Super Bowl halftime show has featured moments that are sometimes more memorable than the game itself. On a massive worldwide stage, audiences have seen everything from a Destiny's Child reunion to a show-stopping performance from the King of Pop.
Here's a look at some of the Super Bowl's best halftime moments:
7. Bruno Mars Brings the Funk
The halftime show is using more about spectacle than musicianship, and while Bruno Mars certainly had plenty of flash, he and his terrific dancing band also brought some serious chops to their halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014. The feel-good performance got the crowd (and audience at home) on their feet and a cameo from the Red Hot Chili Peppers only sweetened the deal (even if their guitars were unplugged).
6. Diana Ross Takes Flight
For the Super Bowl's 30th anniversary in 1996, the Queen of Soul pulled out all the stops, performing her biggest hits while surrounded by hundreds of choral singers on a massive elevated platform. For the grand finale, Ross had a helicopter land on the stage and climbed aboard, singing along out the open door as she flew away.
Prince's 2007 halftime show was as wonderfully eccentric as the performer himself. The show featured covers of "Proud Mary" and "We Will Rock You," and was performed on a stage shaped like the "love symbol" that Prince once took as his name, but the true standout moment featured the risque rocker silhouetted behind a giant screen. The shadow cast by Prince and his guitar *aroused* some ire from family-minded viewers, but it wouldn’t have been a Prince show without some adult content.
4. Aerosmith Teams Up With Teen Pop Superstars
This 2001 halftime show has nearly everything: a vintage "Bye Bye Bye" performance, Britney Spears wearing hand socks, early Britney/Justin for the shippers, plus, Mary J. Blige is there for some reason. Riding high on the success of their Armageddon single "Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing," Aerosmith endeared themselves to a new generation of TRL tweens in a big way.
3. Michael Jackson Lives in the Moment
The King of Pop froze for a full minute-and-a-half after rocketing up through the floor of the stage at 1993's Super Bowl. It’s a crazy moment that would seem arrogant from anyone but MJ, and the crowd in Pasadena just about loses their collective mind.
Queen B brought it in a big way for her halftime performance in 2013, but the highlight of the show had to the be the long-awaited reunion of Destiny's Child. Bey slays as an "Independent Woman," but we’ll always have love for Kelly and Michelle.
1. The Wardrobe Malfunction
As far as memorable Super Bowl moments go, Janet Jackson's 2004 wardrobe malfunction will reign supreme until further notice. P.Diddy and Kid Rock might have also performed this year, but no one remembers anything before Justin Timberlake "accidentally" exposed Janet’s right breast.
