Michael Weatherly has figured out the secret to balancing work and kids, but it hasn't come without sacrifices, as ET found out at the TV Guide party in New York on Wednesday.

Living in Los Angeles and shooting his new CBS show, Bull, in New York makes for a rough commute, but it's worth it to spend time with his wife, Bojana, and their two children, Olivia, 4, and Liam, 2.

"Sleeping on planes two nights a week takes its toll," says Weatherly, who admits to lower back pain. "My kids and my wife are here for two weeks and they were here in September for two weeks, so we're spending a lot of time together. Don't worry about me."

Weatherly also has a 20-year-old son, August, from a previous marriage to actress Amelia Heinle, and they've all gotten an education in how showbiz works from watching their dad's career.

"The kids know and love the work experience," Weatherly tells ET. "Both NCISand Bull have been wonderful places to work, so that's kind of something I have grown used to and am very happy to continue."

All of those coast-to-coast trips are paying off, as Bull is the highest-rated new series on TV this season.

"The thing I'm interested in doing is having fun in front of the camera," Weatherly says. "And trying to tell a fun story every week for you guys."

Bull airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
