James Van Der Beek
is taking on a whole new kind of role in Viceland's new mockumentary series about famed EDM producer Diplo.

The CSI: Cyber star plays the real-life DJ in the hilarious new comedy, which asks the question: What Would Diplo Do?

If this first trailer is any indication, it seems like a person's best bet is to do the opposite of whatever Diplo might do.

Following the misadventures of a fictionalized caricature of Diplo, What Would Diplo Do? documents the 38-year-old musician's day-to-day life as a world famous sound artist, who also happens to be incredibly dumb.

From trying to get "a new sound" by throwing a broken violin in a blender, to getting caught in a hotel hallways completely naked, to fighting sword-wielding ninjas at a concert for some reason, it looks like What Would Diplo Do? might be the kind of tongue-in-cheek, genre-bending series comedy and music fans alike could really embrace.

The idea for the scripted series came from a short comedy video Diplo shot last year called "Day In the Life of Diplo," where Van Der Beek made his first appearance as the DJ, and also fought ninjas.

ET caught up with Van Der Beek on the set of the new series, where he opened up about playing the EDM superstar.

"I've played a lot with my own image, and did a lot of self-parody, and had a lot of fun doing it," said the 40-year-old star, who famously played a cartoonish version of himself on the ABC sitcom Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23. "So to be able to take that global music superstar wad of clay and play with that has been a lot of fun."
