The 43-year-old actress addressed the possibility of a sequel to Steven Spielberg's beloved 1982 hit, E.T. -- which could feature her character Gertie and brother Elliott's kids -- and bluntly explained why it will most likely never happen.
"I will say that in the early '80s there was not a lot of talk of sequels," Barrymore explained, adding that people from Spielberg's camp had expressed interest in follow-ups to his biggest hits, including Jaws. "But he never wanted to make them, because he felt like what he did is just what it should be."
Barrymore recalled going to Spielberg's house as a child, and him telling her, "Nope, we're never going to make a sequel, it's just as it is."
"That was his philosophy, so who was I to question it?" she pondered.
"Adam and I talk all the time about our next thing, and we're like, 'But we're so fat, we're so old, what the f**k?'" she joked. "Literally the last thing I suggested to him was, like, [1981 film] On Golden Pond?. I just watched it on a Korean flight home in, like, the classics section. ...It's really boring though, I'm into Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Adam."
On a more serious note, she did say that she plans to make another film with Sandler to continue their streak.
"Adam and I have done a movie every 10 years three decades in a row," she noteed, referring to The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates and Blended. "You cannot mess with that, and we will do our 10-year ...we just haven't figured out what it is yet."
"No, he's a grouch," she said bluntly. "He was always a grouch. I happened to win him over in that moment and he was always nice to me afterwards."
The actress stressed that the iconic television moment was definitely not planned.
"He didn't expect it. I didn't expect it," she exclaimed. "It was spur of the moment, weird, hedonistic freedom. And you know what, I wouldn't have respected myself if it was some wh*re-y plan ... I'm glad it happened. It was really fun."
ET recently spoke to Barrymore while she was promoting season 2 of her Netflix show, Santa Clarita Diet, and she talked about the importance of balancing motherhood with some me time.
