'Game of Thrones': Arya Wins The Battle of Winterfell

Season eight's third episode made TV history -- and we were here for every minute of it.

The Battle of Winterfell is officially over.

Game of Thrones -- and TV history -- saw its biggest battle yet on Sunday night's episode. ET was live blogging along the way.

The historic episode was expected to bring together more characters since the show's premiere in 2011, but that's not to say they all made it through alive. From the battle field to the crypts of Winterfell -- where women, children and the smart ones (Dany said it, not us) gathered -- the Night King and his army of wights descended upon the castle. Jorah, Beric, Lyanna, Theon, Melisandre and maybe Ghost (we never saw him come back) all met their deaths -- alongside the Night King himself. That's right, our big bad of the series met his demise thanks to Arya's sneaky ways, as she stabbed the mofo right before he killed our Three-Eyed Raven.

Read below for a play-by-play of what went down during the 82-minute episode.

Next Week...

It's promo time, and it's short and sweet. "We have won the Great War. Now we will win the Last War," Daenerys hisses as we get our first look at Cersei since the season premiere. "We'll rip her out, root and stem."

The Battle Concludes

Ser Davos watches Melisandre take off her enchanted necklace and walk into a clear patch of snow, falling to her death.

Jorah's Dead

Arya saved the day -- but Jorah just couldn't be helped. He succumbs to his injuries without any last words to his Kahleesi as Dany cries over him, with Drogon sensing his mother's pain and crouching around her.

DID NOT SEE THAT COMING

The Night King stands over Bran ominously, are WE WERE SURE Bran was going to die.

Leave it to Arya to jump in from behind, stabbing the Night King and killing him -- along with the rest of his army.

Theon's Gone

Theon makes one last charge at the Night King, who quickly breaks his spear and shoves it through Theon's chest, instantly killing him.

The Night King Reaches Bran

Jorah gets stabbed in the side and Dany fights off as many wights as she can, but it's not looking good for our heros.

The Night King heads toward Bran, Brienne yells in pain, and Sam looks like he's almost ready to give up. Theon's still fighting, and he's killed most of the enemies circling him, but the dead just have a way of multiplying on Game of Thrones

"Theon," Bran calls, back from warging. "You're a good man. Thank you."

All Hands (Pun Intended) on Deck

Jon, now back within the walls of Winterfell, struggles to make his way over to Bran and Theon at the weirwood tree.

In the crypts, Sansa is freaking out as the undead Starks destroy those seeking safety. Sansa pulls out the knife that Arya gave her and looks at Tyrion for support and courage. With a quick kiss on his former wife's hand, Tyrion and Sansa gear up to join the fight.

Drogon!!

The wights all start to stab Drogon and his cries are breaking our hearts. Dany is thrown off her dragon and into harm's way -- until Jorah swoops in to save the day (by day, we mean just Dany -- this day is only getting worse).

The Crypts ARE NOT SAFE

The dead are rising in the crypt, just as many had guessed. Gilly runs for her life, as Jon does his best to defeat the wights surrounding him outside -- and Dany finally comes in with fire.

"Bran!" Jon yells, as Dany insists he goes to help his brother cousin.

The Dead Rise

The dead rise all over Winterfell, including Lyanna, several Dothraki and Eddison Tollett. Why didn't they burn the bodies as they went? Your guess is as good as ours.

Fire Doesn't Kill the Night King

With her eyes on the Night King, Dany orders Drogon to breathe fire -- though fire doesn't kill her enemy. THEORY: That Targaryen blood, tho???

The Night King smiles as he throws a spear at Drogon -- but he misses.

Jon charges at our enemy on the ground, as he retaliates by raising the dead. Within seconds, he's grown a new army.

Viserion's Vengeance

Those protecting Bran are quickly taken down as the Night King orders Viserion to breathe fire all over Winterfell.

The dead dragon then goes for Jon and Rhaegal, throwing both the Night King and Jon off their dragons.

Arya Gets a Little Inspiration

"You said we'd meet again," Arya tells Melisandre.

"And here we are at the end of the world," she replies. "What do we say to the God of Death?"

"Not today," Arya answers, as she runs off.

The Hound Saves Arya -- But Beric's a Gonner

The Hound gets over his fear of fire to save Arya from a wight. "Come on! Run!" he yells as he and Beric drag Arya through Winterfell's walls.

Arya watches in horror as Beric sacrifices himself to let her and the Hound escape. The Hound and Arya drag Beric into the Great Hall, but unfortunately we don't think the Lord of Light is going to be able to bring him back this time.

"The Lord brought him back for a purpose and now that purpose has been served," Melisandre tells Arya.

The Battle Approaches the Crypts

Back in the crypts, the women and children -- and other non-fighters -- can hear the wights approaching.

"Open the door!" men can be heard yelling, but despite the look of terror on her face, Sansa stands her ground.

Arya Runs for Her Life

Arya, now sporting a gruesome wound on her forehead, is hiding in the halls of Winterfell, reminding us of a scene in the trailer where she runs for dear life.

She sneaks around corners, armed with a dragon glass sword, and waits to see who's coming after her. Quiet as can be, our girl with no name hides under a table from a wight's pursuit. Her quick thinking saves her from a surprise visitor around the corner, but just as she tries to trap one group of wights, another is hot on her tail.

A Song of Ice and Fire

Blue fire means Viserion is close -- close enough to nearly take down Jon and Dany, who are still aboard their dragons.

A Great Wight vs. A Great Lady

The giant wight is here, taking out multiple warriors. Our sweet Lady Lyanna of Bear Island isn't scared, however, running towards him and taking out his eye.

Lyanna might be dead, but at least she took out a giant with her.

Losing Winterfell -- But Arya's Winning

The wights are inside Winterfell's walls, and we're pretty sure we're not going to get through this episode without losing the castle.

Arya, however, is definitely winning, as she takes down multiple White Walkers while Beric tries to get the Hound back to safety.

Getting Even Closer

Grey Worm, Podrick, Jaime, Brienne, Jorah, Tormund and Gendry are all alive and manning the walls of Winterfell, which the wights are now climbing.

The team uses their dragon glass weapons to try to strike down the approaching enemy, with Brienne and Jaime saving each other from death.

Uh Oh...

We see the Night King for ourselves, and he's on the back of Viserion.

White Walkers Get Smart

One by one, the wights throw themselves onto the flaming trenches in sacrifice in order to form a bridge of burning bodies for the others to use to attack the walls of Winterfell.

Our crew's last defense is gone. The battle now lays immediately outside of the walls of the castle. It's not a good sign -- but we see Jaime and Brienne, who are safe (for now).

Bran Wargs!!

Theon, guarding Bran, tries to apologize for how things went down, but Bran -- as he does these days -- says it's in the past.

"I'm going to go now," Bran declares, before warging into a murder of crows to see what's happening on the battle field -- and the Night King.

Sansa and Tyrion Get Real

"If I was out there right now," Tyrion says in the crypt.

"You'd die," Sansa shoots back. "There's nothing you can do."

"That's why we're down here. None of us can do anything. It's the truth. It's the most heroic thing we can do now," she continues. "Look the truth in the face."

Tyrion suggests that maybe he and Sansa should have stayed married, to which she replies that it just wouldn't work between them -- because of "the Dragon Queen."

Praise that Lord of Light!

The Unsullied form a barrier for the Red Woman to light the trenches, though they're quickly attacked from every angle.

However, Melisandre -- and the Lord of Light -- prevail, igniting the fire the army needs. The Hound (who's not to fond of fire, but it's battle!), Jorah and Beric are still alive, as we await the fate of our other characters.

Time's Up?

No matter what, the wights continue to overtake the army like a plague.

Attempts to light the trenches to guide Dany back to to Winterfell are snuffed, and we get a close up on Grey Worm -- implying his time might be up.

Not Time for Death No. 2... Yet

It was looking like the Hound would be victim No. 2... until Arya saved him by shooting an arrow into the White Walker trying to take him down.

Not Looking Good

Sansa joins Tyron, Varys and Missandei in the crypt, as Dany and Jon struggle to stay on their dragons.

"Pull back!" Lyanna Mormont orders her men to open the gates and give shelter to those who have survived the battle so far.

"To your posts!" they shout as they ready for the next attack.

First Death of the Episode

Sam was about to be our first death of the season, until he's saved by Eddison Tollett -- who gets stabbed through the chest.

HBO

The Crypts!!!

As the dragons disappear into the distance, fear strikes those at Winterfell.

"Get down to the crypt," Arya instructs Sansa, handing her a dagger. "Stick them with the pointy end."

The Dead Really Are Here

"Stand Your Ground!" Brienne yells as the dead approach.

From out of nowhere, Dany's dragons are here with reinforcements, breathing fire into the line of White Walkers, with Dany on Drogon and Jon on Rhaegal.

HBO

It's Happening

Jorah runs back as the music intensifies, signaling the beginning of the battle.

"The Night King is coming," Jon tells Dany.

"The Dead are already here," she hisses back.

Charging Into Darkness

The Dothraki are ready for action, charging into darkness with their swords blazing -- as the rest of the group waits to see what happens.

"Cease fire!" the Dothraki scream as the flames of all their swords dim. Not the best sign...

Valar Morghulis

Death is definitely coming. "Valar Morghulis," Melisandre tells Grey Worm as she walks by and heads inside the castle.

"There's no need to execute, Ser Davos, I'll be dead before the dawn," she tells Davos once inside Winterfell's walls, in their first time together since he had Jon Snow banish her for burning Shireen Baratheon.

HBO

Melisandre Brings the Fire

After being MIA this season, Melisandre arrives on horseback to the frontlines. "Do you speak their tongue?" she asks Jorah.

"Tell them to lift their swords" she says, before delivering a spell in Valyrian and lighting the army's swords with fire.

Moving Into Position

The Hound and Gendry move through the ranks to join the front line -- and so did Sam!

An appearance by Ghost, alongside Jorah, has us hoping our favorite pupper isn't getting ready for his last episode.

HBO

Dragons Spell Danger

Bran heads to his position at the Winterfell weirwood tree to stand as bait for the Night King as his sisters, Arya and Sansa, wait atop the walls outside their childhood home.

Everyone is waiting on bated breath, until Dany's dragons fly above, screeching that something's about to begin.

It's Here!

The episode has officially started -- and it's not looking good. Sam's hands are already shaking, and we can feel the battle about to begin.

Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
