'Fifty Shades of Grey' Dominates the Box Office

Universal Pictures

All of the hype paid off!

Audiences can't stop talking about Fifty Shades of Grey, and it's having the best President's Day weekend opening ever.

In its first weekend, the R-rated film generated a record $81.7 million. To put that number in perspective, that's almost $50 million more than the movie Kingsman: The Secret Service in second place at $35.6 million. Based on the best-selling novel by E.L. James, this movie has already doubled the amount that it cost to make it, $40 million.

And while there's been a lot of anticipation, these sales only further prove that sex sells. There are seven sex scenes in this romance, and those "Red Room" moments caused a lot of curiosity before the release as both Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson teased them together.

"Some of the Red Room stuff was uncomfortable," Dornan admitted to Glamour. "There were times when Dakota was not wearing much, and I had to do stuff to her that I’d never choose to do to a woman."

"I didn’t go to the sex dungeon," Johnson confessed to the mag. "I wanted to keep myself distanced from it at first because I wanted Ana's reaction to certain things to be completely honest and real, like new."

Fifty Shades of Grey chronicles the intense romance between a S&M- loving businessman Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan) and a timid college student Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson).
