Judd Apatow Stands Up for Bill Cosby Accusers, Insists Venues Cancel Appearances
By Jackie Willis
Judd Apatow doesn't find anything funny about Bill Cosby still getting work after being accused of sexual abuse by numerous women.
The 47-year-old director took to Twitter over the holiday weekend and insisted that venues that still have The Cosby Show star booked for comedy shows cancel those performances. "So @Centre_Square - are you really going to let Bill Cosby perform on your stage January 7?" Apatow tweeted on Friday, Dec. 26. "You too @BudGardens Jan 8? Is Cosby only popular in Ontario Canada at this point? Do people still find him delightful after 30 accuses?"
The tweets led to some attempting to defend Cosby. One Twitter user wrote: "@mikeandrewb: @JuddApatow @Centre_Square and ur obsession is because…?" To which the Superbad director responded: "I guess it's because guys who rape a lot aren't cool."
Pointing out that Cosby has never been charged for any such crimes and has denied the allegations, another user responded: "@juddapatow should these allegations be proven to be true, obviously it's a terrible thing. If they are untrue, imagine being Cosby." Apatow was quick to write back: "@katiebearpink imagine how those people felt to be losing consciousness and realizing what he was going to do. Unable to stop the nightmare."
Apatow later added, "Also- I am pretty sure I have had sex with less people than he raped. I always wonder why some people try so hard to not believe women who have been assaulted. What is the root of that?"
He also responded to a Page Six report that claims that the 77-year-old comedian has hired private investigators to drudge up dirt on his alleged victims. "@PageSix they should remake The Cosby Show with scenes of Dr. Huxtable doing what Cosby has been doing," Apatow tweeted. "A perfect show for FX."
The director did acknowledge that Cosby's supporters do seem few and far between. "I think one in a Hundred thousand people support Cosby," he tweeted. "I am gonna stop responding to them so often. It is just maddening though. So cold."
