Lady Gaga Angers Fans in China After Meeting With the Dalai Lama

Some reports are even suggesting that her music is being banned in the country.

Lady Gaga is having something of a "Bad Romance" with China.

The 30-year-old pop star is causing a stir after meeting with the Dalai Lama -- the exiled former spiritual leader of Tibet, accused of leading a failed uprising against the Chinese government -- at the U.S. Conference of Mayors in Indianapolis on Sunday. Gaga and the Dalai Lama engaged in a discussion on the benefits of compassion and kindness, which was streamed live on YouTube. (Lady Gaga's remarks begin around 01:05:15.)

Gaga also shared video of a backstage interview between her and the Dalai Lama on her Facebook page.

"There is a broad consensus internationally about what kind of person the Dalai Lama is and what he does internationally," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said in a briefing, according to Reuters.

Referring to Lady Gaga's meeting, he added: "After the relevant incident happened, if you look at comments on the Chinese Internet, their anger has welled up."

A report from The Guardian suggests that "the Communist party's mysterious propaganda department issued 'an important instruction' banning her entire repertoire from mainland China," citing Hong Kong's Apple Daily.

According to CNN, Lei declined to comment on said reports.

According to a previous report by CNN Money, several artists have already been blacklisted in China over the years, including Elton John, Bjork, Maroon 5, and Linkin Park, to name a few. Furthermore, any foreign musician planning to perform in China is subject to censorship and must first be cleared by the Ministry of Culture. Sometimes, acts can be banned from performing certain songs or forced to change their lyrics. Lady Gaga has previously performed in Hong Kong and Macau, but never on mainland China.
