ET learned last week that the 'Boyz n the Hood' director was in the hospital.

John Singleton is in a coma.

ET confirmed last week that the Boyz n the Hood director was currently in the hospital after suffering a stroke, but his condition is more serious than previously reported. Legal documents obtained by ET on Thursday reveal that Singleton, 51, suffered a major stroke on April 17, and is in a coma.  His family is in the process of establishing a conservatorship for him.

According to the documents, Singleton's mother, Shelia Ward, is asking a judge to appoint her temporary conservator because her son is "unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter." Singleton did not have any medical directives.

Ward says in the docs that at the time Singleton suffered the stroke, he was engaged in several business projects and was prepared to sign a lucrative settlement agreement later this month. She is asking to handle those affairs and execute the settlement agreement.
