ET takes a look back at Janet Jackson’s history-making ‘Rhythm Nation’ era with exclusive interviews from our vault including previously unseen footage. In September 1989, Janet Jackson invited friends like Holly Robinson, Donny Osmond and Emilio Estevez to a party with the instruction to wear all black. It was at this party where Jackson announced her fourth studio album, ‘Rhythm Nation 1814,’ and told guests that the record would have a socially conscious theme. The album would go on to produce a record-breaking seven top-five singles. In a 1989 sit-down interview, Janet discusses the impact of the ‘Rhythm Nation 1814.’ In 1990, Janet embarked on her first tour, which still holds the title for most successful debut tour of all time. At the Los Angeles tour stop in April 1990, ET caught rapper Eazy-E checking out Janet’s show. After winning eight Billboard Music Awards in one night at the 1990 event, ET spoke with Janet about taking on a sexier image with the Herb Ritts-directed music video for ‘Love Will Never Do (Without You),’ as well as having a friendly competition with her brother Michael.
