Ryan Gosling Defends Eva Mendes' 'Sweatpants' Comment, Eva 'Feels Terrible'

Ryan Gosling assures his fans he's not a sweatpants hater.

It was a joke, people!

Ryan Gosling has taken to Twitter after some took offense to his girlfriend Eva Mendes' recent comments that sweatpants are the "number one cause of divorce."

Everyone's favorite dreamboat assured his fans on Thursday that no, he's not actually a sweatpants hater.

"Obviously sweatpants thing was a joke. Wearing them now," the 34-year-old Only God Forgives actor tweeted. "That's right, tweeting in sweatpants. Rats! Said too much! You win again Twitter."

Eva also took to her Instagram to reiterate that her comments weren't meant to be taken seriously.

"Dear favorite pair of sweatpants. I was just kidding when I said you're the #1 cause of divorce. Everyone knows that orange crocs are the #1 cause of divorce," she joked. "Either way it was a bad joke and feel terrible if you or anyone thought I was serious. Thanks for understanding sweatpants. Sorry orange crocs."

The sweatpants uproar started on Wednesday, when Eva made the impromptu joke while promoting her makeup line, Circa. "You can't do sweatpants," she laughed. "Ladies, number one cause of divorce in America, sweatpants, no!"

Clearly, she struck a nerve.

But the 41-year-old actress has been super-careful about offending others before, refusing to even give any mothering advice to Women's Health for fear of rubbing fellow mothers the wrong way.

"I want to respect all the moms out there," she explained. "They're going to be like, 'You know what? You're a few months in. Just shut up.'"

I think we can all agree that Eva -- who has a six-month old daughter, Esmeralda, with Ryan -- didn't mean any harm.
