EXCLUSIVE: Leona Lewis Opens Up About Christina Grimmie and Her Own Scary Fan Encounters

The 'Cats' star says she won't stop meeting her fans.

ET caught up with Leona Lewis at the Tony Awards on Sunday night, where the Broadway actress spoke about scary fan encounters in light of the tragic shooting of pop singer Christina Grimmie on Friday.

Grimmie and Lewis both came up through the world of televised singing competitions, with Lewis winning the U.K. X-Factor in 2006 and Grimmie placing third on the sixth season of The Voice. "It's horrible and it's so... I'm so sad about what happened [to Christina] and just my heart goes out to her, her family, her friends," Lewis told ET's Nischelle Turner.

Lewis, who is set to star in the upcoming Broadway revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats, unfortunately knows a thing or two about fans who get too close. The 31-year-old singer was assaulted by a male fan during a book signing in London in 2009.

"I still go out and do meet and greets, I still love to meet my fans and I still love to have that one-on-one interaction with them. I would never let anything stop me from doing that," she told ET. A spokesman for Lewis told media at the time of the assault that she had been signing books for about 90 minutes when "a guy came up and punched her to the side of the head."

But Lewis won't stop meeting fans. "I just keep pushing through it. That's one in a million -- one in a billion -- so you have to keep, you know, have faith in people."

Grimmie was killed during a meet and greet with fans after a performance in Orlando, Florida. Her brother, Marcus, who was with her when she died, shared a heartbreaking statement on Saturday saying Christina was "more than my sister, she was a partner in life."
