'If you let people in, it devalues what love is,' the actor shares.

Robert Pattinson is addressing his high-profile romances with Twilight co-star Kristen Stewart and singer FKA Twigs.

The notoriously private 32-year-old actor gets candid about dating in the limelight during a new interview with The Times, in which he was asked if he’s still on good terms with his former flames.

“Yes, yes," he simply responds, later adding that he doesn't think public romances are doomed and pointing out that they were “pretty long relationships, not like three months.”

Pattinson started dating Stewart in 2008, but eventually moved out of their home in 2013 amid rumors that she had cheated on him with her Snow White and the Hunstman director, Rupert Sanders, the previous year. He told ET in June that she was one of his favorite boss ladies. After Stewart, he dated Twigs for three years until 2017.

Asked about discussing his latest rumored love, Suki Waterhouse, he says, “Do I have to?” before explaining why he prefers not to address his love life publicly.

“If you let people in, it devalues what love is,” he says. “If a stranger on the street asked you about your relationship, you’d think it extremely rude. If you put up a wall it ends up better.”

“I can’t understand how someone can walk down the street holding hands, and it’s the same as when I do it and a hundred people are taking your photo,” he continues. “The line between when you’re performing and when you’re not will eventually get washed away and you’ll go completely mad.”

During the interview, Pattinson also reflects on his career and the “scary” time he faced after the phenomenal success of Twilight, in which he played Edward Cullen.

“There was a period when I didn’t work for a year,” he shares. “That was scary. I tried to start a restaurant. Absolutely disastrous.”

During that time, he also dreamed of starting a private dive bar where patrons would require facial recognition to get in.

Despite the downtime, he has since continued to work on successful projects like Water for Elephants, opposite Reese Witherspoon, and is now starring in the film High Life.
