Broadway's breakout, biographical musical about Alexander Hamilton leads this year Tony Award nominees.

Hamilton, Broadway’s
breakout, biographical musical about Alexander Hamilton, leads this year Tony
Award
nominees.

The story of the “ten-dollar founding father without a
father” told through song and rap -- with music, lyrics, and book written by
Broadway wunderkind Lin-Manuel Miranda -- has been sold out every night, earning
$70 million in advance sales. Fans wait for hours in front of the Richard
Rodgers Theatre every day just for a chance to be “in the room where it
happens.” So, it came as no surprise when it racked up 16 nominations, including Best Musical, once the complete list of
Tony nominees were revealed live by Broadway stars, Andrew Rannells and Nikki
James, on Tuesday.

Hamilton, which has already won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a GRAMMY for Best Musical Theater Album, stands to add plenty of awards to its growing list of accolades. Miranda himself was nominated for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of the founding father, while the musical other breakout stars -- Leslie Odom, Jr., Daveed Diggs, Jonathan Groff, Phillipa Soo and Renee Elise Goldsberry -- all were recognized in the acting categories.

The other big show was Shuffle Along, Or the Making of the Musical Sensation
of 1921 and All That Followed
, which picked up 10 nominations. The musical, starring Audra McDonald, will face off against Hamilton in the Best Musical category alongside Bright Star, School of Rock: The Musical, and Waitress

On the play side, Long Day's Journey Into Night, starring Jessica Lange and Michael Shannon, picked up seven nominations, besting Lupita Nyong'o's drama, Eclipsed, by one nomination.
