Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are remaining cordial while finalizing their divorce.
Just days after a judge ruled that the pair's marriage was officially over, a source tells ET that their relationship is "the best it's been since their split."
"Brad and Angelina have come a long way," the source says, before addressing how the split has affected their six children: Maddox, 17, Pax, 15, Zahara, 14, Shilo, 12, and 10-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
"To the surprise of many of their closest friends, their communication has improved tremendously and they're both dedicated to co-parenting," the source says. "Their kids have a custody schedule and that's made a huge difference for the whole family. The schedule has alleviated any of the planning pressures Brad and Angelina have faced in the past. Now the kids spend time with both their parents and are happy and thriving."
While the source says moving forward "took time because there were a lot of very hard feelings," their post-couple relationship has never been better.
"While they don't agree about everything, they rarely argue now," the source says. "Brad and Angelina are now at a point where they can discuss their children's plans calmly."
As for Jolie, the source says she "has moved forward and thrown herself into her work and children."
"She's working on some big movies and is very driven when it comes to her career, so she's in a good place," the source adds.
Pitt, according to the source, "is dating, but he's a free spirit when it comes to dating."
"He is enjoying himself, nothing serious," the source says.
Last week, when the judge ruled that their marriage was officially over, Pitt and Jolie requested a bifurcated judgment, which would allow their single status to be restored while they finalize their divorce. Jolie initially filed for divorce in 2016 and, after a tense custody battle, the pair reached a custody agreement last November.
"A custody arrangement was agreed to weeks ago, and has been signed by both parties and the judge," Jolie’s attorney, Samantha Bley DeJean, told ET in a statement at the time. "The agreement, which is based on the recommendations of the child custody evaluator, eliminates the need for a trial. The filing and details of the agreement are confidential to protect the best interests of the children."
A source close to the matter told ET at the time that Jolie was "pleased to be entering the next stage and relieved at the progress for the health of their family."
