¡De Chile para el mundo!
Sultry, gritty, passionate and powerful are just a few ways to describe the uber-talented Mon Laferte.
Born Norma Monserrat Bustamante Laferte, the Chilean singer-songwriter made her debut at Coachella on Friday. Fans applauded the 35-year-old artist as she performed "Tormento," "Mi buen amor," "Amárrame," "El Beso," and "Mambo" bringing a little bit of rock, cumbia and salsa to Indio, California.
Wearing a one shoulder red dress, the songstress also covered Dua Lipa's song, "New Rules," prompting the crowd to cheer and applaud. "I love her," Laferte told ET following her performance. "I never had the courage to perform one of her songs before, but a few days ago I thought why not do a cover. I would love to collaborate with her one day."
"I feel so happy. I was nervous before hitting the stage," Laferte said of her Coachella set. "I would say it's a dream come true. Performing at these types of festivals seemed impossible and even more so when you sing Spanish songs. It's surreal."
"I love all genres of music but I love to tell stories," she continued. "My style is dramatic-theatrical with bolero, dance, and rock. My goal is to make people feel something. I write personal songs based off my experiences and sometimes when I sing them it still hurts, it's difficult, but when I see people sing them back and make it their own, it's almost therapeutic. It helps heal me because it stops being just my song but a song for the people."
Laferte isn’t the only Chilean queen taking over the annual music festival; fellow artists Javiera Mena and Tomasa Del Real will also be flying in to perform. The "Tu Falta" singer will return to Coachella on April 19, for the second weekend of the festival. Other Latinx artists performing this weekend include Rosalia, J Balvin and Bad Bunny.
