'60 Minutes' Commentator Andy Rooney Dies at 92

Andy Rooney has died at age 92, only a month after retiring from 60 Minutes, according to CBS News.

Rooney had been sharing words of wisdom on the broadcast since 1978, after getting his start writing for The Stars and Stripes during World War II, and joining CBS in 1949.

During his 60 Minutes segment, A Few Minutes with Andy Rooney, the opinionated essayist critiqued modern life with his signature sense of humor. One example of his trademark style: "We need people who can actually do things. We have too many bosses and too few workers. More college graduates ought to become plumbers or electricians, then go home at night and read Shakespeare."

Rooney was born in Albany, New York on January 14, 1911. He was drafted into the Army while attending Colgate University, where he received a Bronze Star for reporting on the Battle of St. Lo, France, according to CBS News. Rooney received numerous accolades over the course of his half-century-plus career, including four Emmys.
