Demi Lovato Retraces Life from Rehab to Recovery

After her successful career began to head into the wrong direction with personal and physical struggles, Demi Lovato exposed an in-depth look at her recovery process through a special entitled Stay Strong that aired on MTV last night.

In the one-hour special that ventured through the various stages of Lovato's struggles and recovery, the 19-year-old singer and actress was very candid about her struggle with self-mutilation.

"I was dealing with all this pain emotionally, and I felt guilt and shame," Lovato confesses in the featured clip. "I decided to take it out on myself. I harmed myself."

As an image of her wrists then dominates the screen, Lovato elaborates, "It was my way of taking my own shame and my own guilt out on myself."

Although she admitted during the special that she can not honestly say that she hasn't self-mutilated or struggled with her eating disorder since returning from rehab, Lovato is making strides to keep her career on track.

She admitted that music itself has been what has propelled her recovery and essentially sustained her life.

"Without music it would be really, really hard to survive and really, really hard stay in recovery," she said.
