The actor took the stage at the Golden Globes and appeared in good spirits.

Jim Carrey put a smile on everyone’s face at the Golden Globes.

The 53-year-old actor, making his first TV appearance since his girlfriend Cathriona White’s death in September, was on hand to present the award for Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical. Before announcing The Martian as the winner, Carrey delivered a hilariously out-there monologue about, well, himself.

"I am two-time Golden Globe winner Jim Carrey," the comedian said as he took the stage. "When I go to sleep at night, I'm not just a guy going to sleep. I'm two-time Golden Globe winner Jim Carrey going to get some well-needed shut-eye. And when I dream I don't just dream any old dream. No sir. I dream about being three-time Golden Globe-winning actor Jim Carrey. Because then I would be enough.”

Carrey, who sported a bushy greying beard and mile-wide smile, concluded, “These are important, these awards. I don't want you think that just because if you blew up our solar system, you wouldn't be able to find us or any of you in human history with the naked eye. But from our perspective, this is huge."

L.A. Times
writer Amy Kaufman revealed on Twitter that Carrey’s banter was totally ad-libbed, with the only pre-planned text on the teleprompter seguing into the nominees.

Carrey and White dated on and off for three years, starting in 2012. On Sept. 28, the 30-year-old was found dead in her home of an apparent suicide. As of October, her official cause of death was still unknown. For his part, Carrey served as a pallbearer at White’s funeral in her homeland of Ireland.

At the time, the actor released a statement saying he was “shocked and deeply saddened” by Cathriona’s death. “She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled,” he said. “My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her. We have all been hit with a lightning bolt.”
