'TRON 3' & 'The Black Hole' Production Update

After the moderate box-office success of 2010's TRON: Legacy, a sequel was announced, but little more has been revealed about it, much less a start date. Meanwhile, a reworking of another decades-old Disney property, 1979's The Black Hole, has been in the works for some time. At Tuesday's press junket for the upcoming Oblivion Blu-ray release on August 6, director Joseph Kosinski gave ETonline an update on the two highly anticipated projects.

"Both projects are being written right now by two really talented writers: Jon Spaihts is writing Black Hole and Jesse Wigutow is writing TRON 3, and both scripts are in progress," says Kosinski. "I'm really excited about both. The fundamental ideas of both are really interesting."

At the end of TRON: Legacy, the evil program CLU (played by a CGI-youthified Jeff Bridges) is plotting to enter the human world and take it over, but he's thwarted by his original programmer, Flynn (the present-age Jeff Bridges), who sacrifices himself to destroy CLU. Afterwards, Flynn's son Sam (Garrett Hedlund) returns to the real world with the program Quorra (Olivia Wilde) to retake control of the software giant ENCOM.

"The TRON sequel kind of takes where we left off with Legacy, that idea presented in the last few minutes of the film, and really expands on it in a real exciting way," reveals Kosinski.

As for that updated Black Hole movie (which is teased in TRON: Legacy with a quick shot of a poster on a toy shelf in the opening minutes), which itself was essentially a remake of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea in outer space for the Star Wars generation, Kosinski clarifies whether or not the film will be a remake or a reboot.

"I guess I would call it a reboot because the fundamental concept is there, but we are taking it in our own direction," he says.

So which film will go before the cameras first? It appears that Kosinski is still in a holding pattern, telling ETonline that when he has an answer, there will be an announcement.
