"In our sport we always think about sharks and know we are in their domain," he continued. "Many thanks to all the people that have reached out and sent their wishes. Jbay is an incredible place and I will go back one day. Thanks to the @wsl announcers and water patrol for being on top of us and the care they showed us and to all my friends on tour that were by my side. Love you all."

Wilson also posted an emotional message to Instagram, writing, "Love you brother! Today was one of those days you hope you'll never experience in life and to see you stand your ground and fend off that monster. You're my hero mate. So happy I could give you a hug on the boat with all limbs in tact. You're the true definition of living by the sword."

The scary attack was vividly captured on social media, the shark pulling Fanning off of his board, when Fanning said that he punched the creature in the back.

Many online were blown away by Fanning's close call. Lady Gaga tweeted out the video on Monday, writing, "Holy sh*t praise the lord. Wow."
