Can exes really ever be friends? Jason Derulo sure hopes so.

The “Talk Dirty” singer stopped by Good Morning America on Monday morning to help announce the 2015 American Music Award nominations alongside Charli XCX, just weeks after making headlines with his high profile split from longtime girlfriend Jordin Sparks.

ET caught up with Derulo in NYC, where he shared what bothered him most about the media backlash he received after the breakup.

"People want to make a buck whenever they can, it's all about bringing that next story,” he said. “It was negative for me, you know what I'm saying. I didn't want people to have that kind of image."

Derulo has high-hopes of maintaining a friendship with Sparks despite the rumored bad-breakup. "We can [be friends], it's a little early, but yeah."

Jason ended his three-year relationship with  Jordin last month, explaining in an interview with Ryan Seacrest that the “pressure of marriage” was a big reason for the split.

The 25-year-old is gearing up to hit the road on his first-ever U.S. headlining tour.  His first stop is Wednesday, October 15th, in Royal Oak, Michigan.
