<p>It’s <a href="https://www.etonline.com/black-history-month-how-it-began-and-how-to-celebrate-159566" target="_blank">Black History Month</a>, a time to pause and appreciate the undeniable impact Black people have had on the history of the United States and the world. We acknowledge the struggle, yes, and all of the things Black people have overcome -- but we also celebrate life, love and Black joy. Isn’t it poetic, then, that Valentine’s Day occurs during Black History Month? It's the perfect reason to spotlight all the things we love about Black culture and to recognize how far we’ve come when it comes to seeing Black love unencumbered by Black trauma onscreen.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Black love in TV and movies has hit a gorgeous stride as of late. The last few years have seen a number of great films like the recently released <i><a href="https://www.etonline.com/malcolm-and-marie-trailer-starring-zendaya-john-david-washington-158759" target="_blank">Malcolm &amp; Marie</a>, </i>which plopped us in the middle of a dramatic battle between lovers. <a href="https://www.etonline.com/features/205634_scene_stealers_2016_andre_holland" target="_blank"><i>Moonlight</i></a> showed us a coming-of-age tale complete with a decades-long love story. <a href="https://www.etonline.com/media/videos/the-photograph-trailer-issa-rae-and-lakeith-stanfield-fall-in-love-135482" target="_blank"><i>The Photograph</i></a> gave us love across generations. <a href="https://www.etonline.com/sylvies-love-nnamdi-asomugha-tessa-thompson-interview-158241" target="_blank"><i>Sylvie’s Love</i></a> transported us back to the mid-1900s for a love story that felt simultaneously fresh and classic.</p>

<p>Upon release, <i>The Photograph</i> saw plenty of comparisons to the 1997 film <i>Love Jones</i>. Director Stella Meghie said she was&nbsp;thankful, calling <i>Love Jones</i> “an iconic Black romance film” and saying “if you are doing it right, probably someone is going to mention it.” She also explained to ET's Nischelle Turner the effect that <i>Love Jones</i> had on her growing up. “It’s just one of those things that’s inside of you,” she said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The couples in these films join a long line of lovebirds in classic Black movies and TV shows who have imprinted popular culture. So let’s take a closer look at the pop culture moments that prove these timeless Black TV and movie couples’ lasting impact.</p>

<h3>Movies</h3>

<p><strong><i>Love Jones</i></strong></p>

<p>In 2006, Kanye West released a video for <i>Touch the Sky, </i>which featured cameos by not only the hilarious Tracee Ellis Ross, but also the one and only Nia Long. Her appearance in the video was inspired by one key lyric: "Couldn't keep it at home, thought I needed a Nia Long."</p>

<p>Back in the ‘90s -- and even to this day -- everyone thought they needed a Nia Long or that they needed to <i>be</i> Nia Long. The infatuation sprang from her many roles as a love interest to the likes of Will Smith (on <i>The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air</i>), Cuba Gooding, Jr. (in <i>Boyz n the Hood</i>) and Larenz Tate (in <i>Love Jones</i>). Her role as Nina in <i>Love Jones</i> made her a mainstay in familiar casts in the Black romantic movie boom of the ‘90s and early 2000s.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong><i>Poetic Justice</i></strong></p>

<p>Starring Tupac Shakur and Janet Jackson, <i>Poetic Justice</i> quickly became a favorite. The movie had an immediate effect on fashion and also includes a fantastic early performance from Regina King and poetry by the legendary Maya Angelou.</p>

<p>Jackson <a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=AswDAAAAMBAJ&amp;pg=PA36&amp;dq=janet+jackson+poetic+justice+interview+1993&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjY4tqT2YPRAhXDwiYKHXspDEUQ6AEIGzAA#v=onepage&amp;q=janet%20jackson%20poetic%20justice%20interview%201993&amp;f=false">has credited</a> her work with Shakur in the film for helping her break out of her shell. The film was released in 1993, the same year as her strong, sexy self-titled album and four years ahead of the adventurous <i>The Velvet Rope</i>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With Jackson and Shakur leading the cast, the movie almost feels like a hip-hop and R&amp;B collaboration. So it’s no wonder the film has influenced rap music. Kendrick Lamar released “Poetic Justice” featuring Drake and a teasing hook from Janet Jackson in 2016.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Big Sean and Jhene Aiko take on Shakur’s and Jackson’s characters in the 2020 music video for the song “<a href="https://www.etonline.com/big-sean-and-jhene-aiko-recreate-iconic-poetic-justice-love-jones-scenes-in-body-language-music">Body Language</a>.” The video also recreates scenes from <i>Love Jones</i>, <i>The Best Man</i> and <i>Waiting to Exhale</i>.&nbsp;"Big homage paying to a few of my favorite flicks growin up," the rapper wrote on Instagram about the movies he referenced in his music video.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong><i>Waiting to Exhale</i></strong></p>

<p><i>Waiting to Exhale</i> totes a stellar cast (Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Lela Rochon, Gregory Hines… ) and equally incredible soundtrack (Whitney Houston, Babyface, Toni Braxton... ). And while there are many memorable scenes, the moment when Angela Bassett’s Bernadine hits her limit and sets her cheating husband’s car ablaze has been reimagined in TV shows, music videos and the gif that says a thousand words, even when you only have 280 characters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The movie celebrated its <a href="https://www.etonline.com/waiting-to-exhale-star-angela-bassett-reflects-on-working-with-whitney-houston-25-years-later">25th anniversary</a> in December of last year, and Bassett spoke of how important it still is. "I say it still holds up," Bassett told ET's Kevin Frazier&nbsp;of the film, which still has a devoted fan base even a quarter-century after its&nbsp;1995 release. "To that point we hadn't seen films that told the lives of older Black women. [And] it was the first of a film that featured women for women, so it was really, you know, a trailblazer." &nbsp;</p>

<p><strong><i>The Best Man</i></strong></p>

<p><i>Love Jones’</i> Nia Long also stars in the 1999 film <i>The Best Man</i>, along with other members of the Black love boom crew: Taye Diggs (<i>How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Brown Sugar</i>), Morris Chestnut (<i>The Inkwell, Two Can Play That Game)</i>, Sanaa Lathan (<i>Love &amp; Basketball, Brown Sugar)</i> and Terrence Howard (Yes, Ashanti’s “Foolish” video counts here).&nbsp;</p>

<p><i>The Best Man</i>’s ensemble cast -- which includes Melissa De Sousa,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.etonline.com/people/regina-hall" target="_blank">Regina Hall</a>&nbsp;and Harold Perrineau --, their romantic connections and friendships and the blurred lines between, became a template for many Black rom-coms to come. And the film’s wedding scene influenced many<a href="https://www.essence.com/entertainment/the-best-man-changed-black-weddings-forever-thanks-to-one-song/"> real-life nuptials</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The beloved film got a sequel, <i>The Best Man Holiday</i>, in 2013 and,&nbsp;in 2022, an <a href="https://www.etonline.com/the-best-man-cast-returns-for-their-final-chapters-in-peacock-series-trailer-watch-193554" rel="" target="_blank">eight-episode&nbsp;limited series</a> premiered on Peacock. <a href="https://www.etonline.com/tv/the-best-man-the-final-chapters" rel="" target="_blank"><em>The Best Man: The Final Chapters</em></a><em>&nbsp;</em>brought <a href="https://www.etonline.com/nicole-ari-parker-ron-canada-and-more-join-peacocks-the-best-man-final-chapters-183262" target="_blank">several recurring guest stars</a>&nbsp;together with&nbsp;our&nbsp;favorite dysfunctional friend group as Harper is given the opportunity to turn his debut&nbsp;novel which kicked off the wild ride over 20 years ago,&nbsp;<em>Unfinished Business</em>,&nbsp;into a movie.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong><i>The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air</i></strong></p>

<p>The impression <i>The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air</i> has had on television and popular culture is evident. Similar to <i>The Cosby Show</i> before it, the show opened up what a Black family on television could be and a new representation of&nbsp;Black life…</p>

<p>… and Black love. The bond between Uncle Phil (James Avery) and Aunt Viv (Janet Hubbard from 1990-1993 and Daphne Maxwell Reid from 1993-1996) was the bedrock on which this classic family stood.&nbsp;</p>

<p>J. Cole outlined the type of love he’d like to have in his song, “No Role Modelz.” The rapper starts by pointing to Uncle Phil as “the only father that [I] ever knew,” and later says he wants “a real love, dark-skinned Aunt Viv love.” GoldLink kicks off Christina Aguilera’s song, “Like I Do,” with a verse that includes&nbsp;the line, “Let’s start a family, I’m Uncle Phil, you my Aunt Viv.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The <a href="https://www.etonline.com/will-smith-and-fresh-prince-of-bel-air-cast-pay-tribute-to-james-avery-during-reunion-145814"><i>Fresh Prince of Bel-Air </i>cast reconnected </a>late last year and, during the reunion, they spoke of their love for the late Avery. “I fell in love with him as soon as I met him,” Reid said of her on-screen husband. “He was so generous in heart and spirit and so smart and so open too, I mean, his life was a big hug.”</p>

<p><strong><em>A Different World</em></strong></p>

<p>Where the Huxtables&nbsp;gave us representation&nbsp;of a Black American family, <em>The Cosby Show</em>'s&nbsp;spinoff,&nbsp;<em>A Different World</em>, showed us the lives of young Black students in an HBCU environment. The lessons learned weren't just in class -- these characters also experienced, among other things, young love. Lisa Bonet (Denise Huxtable) was only part of the cast for the show's first season. In the end, this was fine, as the true stars of the show emerged: Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert) and Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne). The saga of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne remains one of television's&nbsp;best love stories, played out over six seasons.</p>

<p>Style in the late '80s and '90s was directly influenced by this couple -- the Dwayne's flip-up shades and Whitley's iconic skirt suits. The couple has been referenced in songs by J. Cole&nbsp;("Know we be arguing, but ain't you riding with me / We breaking up, we making up like Dwayne Wayne and Whitley"<em>)</em>&nbsp;and Nicki Minaj&nbsp;("I was on the plane with Dwayne / You can call me Whitley, I go to Hillman / Listen, I'm the baddest in the school, the baddest in the game / Excuse me, honey, but nobody's in my lane").&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong><i>Martin</i>&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p><a href="https://www.etonline.com/tisha-campbell-reflects-importance-of-martin-and-reboot-156555" target="_blank"><i>Martin</i></a>, starring Martin Lawrence (Martin) and Tisha Campbell (Gina), had an undeniable impact on modern culture. Set in Detroit, the stars and themes of the show were unabashedly Black. Stars like Biggie Smalls, OutKast&nbsp;and Snoop Dogg guest starred on the show, bringing more attention to the expanding hip-hop scene in the 1990s. And though we only speak of the first four seasons of <i>Martin</i> (season 5 onward is a more <a href="https://www.etonline.com/media/videos/tisha-campbell-on-reconciling-her-friendship-with-martin-lawrence-leading-ladies-of">tumultuous conversation</a>) there’s no match for that iconic, best friend love portrayed by Lawrence and Campbell. “The one thing I’m most proud of with <i>Martin</i> is that it shows a Black man loving and respecting his Black woman,” Lawrence told <i>Vibe</i><a href="https://books.google.com/books?id=1SsEAAAAMBAJ&amp;pg=PA76&amp;lpg=PA76&amp;dq=martin+inspired+by+eddie+murphy+flip+wilson&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=4uGpC957fL&amp;sig=f1gSwiiKlCH5HLdbyDcIixSehik&amp;hl=en&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=0ahUKEwib0NWZgoLUAhUE7RQKHbLVCssQ6AEIRjAK#v=onepage&amp;q&amp;f=false"> magazine</a> in 1997 of the relationship at the center of the show.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Phrases from the show still live in our vernacular ("You go, girl!" and "Damn Gina!" being the most popular). References to the love bond in <i>Martin</i> have popped&nbsp;in music by artists like SZA (“Go Gina”), Polo G (“Martin &amp; Gina”) and others. LeBron James occasionally posts <i>Martin</i> clips on his Instagram. Campbell is still called “Gina” when fans see her in public, but it doesn’t bother her. “I get that all the time but I don’t mind. I love it. I love that people revere it so much that all of the memes, they come from that and people love it and I appreciate it. We all do," <a href="https://www.etonline.com/tisha-campbell-reflects-importance-of-martin-and-reboot-156555" target="_blank">she told ET's Kevin Frazier</a>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Campbell had more to share on the impact of <i>Martin.</i> “There were so many Black shows going on at the time. What was important was that there were two young African American people who were in love,” the actress continued. “Now, we had <i>The Cosby Show </i>representation. But we really [never] had two young people who were having fun, discovering each other, discovering life. I think that is [why] there are so many songs about Martin and Gina.”&nbsp;</p>

Black Couples in TV and Movies Who Have Influenced Pop Culture

<p>It's Black History Month 2023. The month-long celebration is a chance to acknowledge the historic achievements of Black Americans and to highlight their undeniable impact on American history. Game changers like Malcolm X, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, Jr. are some of the names we learn more about each February. But the celebration that is now Black History Month started long before these civil rights leaders made their mark.</p>

<h1><b>How It Started</b></h1>

<h3><strong><em>Negro History Week</em></strong></h3>

<p>In 1915, historian Dr. Carter G. Woodson and minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). This group focused on researching the advancements made by people of African descent and, in 1926, sponsored the first Negro History Week.</p>

<h3><strong><em>Why February?</em></strong></h3>

<p>The ASALH selected a week in February to coincide with Abraham Lincoln’s birthday (Feb. 12) and Frederick Douglass’ birthday (Feb. 14), dates the Black community had, at that time, celebrated for decades. Though the timing was chosen based on set traditions, Woodson always had higher ideals for the celebration. “We are going back to that beautiful history and it is going to inspire us to greater achievements,” he told a group of students just a few years before issuing a press release announcing Negro History Week.</p>

<h3><strong><em>Advancement</em></strong></h3>

<p>Through the 1920s, ‘30s and ‘40s, the observation of Negro History Week grew in popularity across America among budding Black history clubs. Joined with other celebrations like Negro Brotherhood Week, the period of time grew larger. Black teachers began teaching Black history curriculum in schools in addition to U.S. history. Each year, major cities acknowledged the celebration. Even before Woodson’s death in the 1950s, cities in West Virginia and other pockets of the country were starting to elongate Negro History Week celebrations to the full month of February. Then came the civil rights movement.</p>

<p>In the 1960s, the focus on Black identity provided fertile ground for Negro History Week to grow into Black History Month. In 1976, during the United States Bicentennial celebration, President Gerald Ford recognized February as Black History Month, and encouraged Americans to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”</p>

<p>So much Black history is largely missing from the school curriculum and what is present constantly faces the danger of being erased. One of the best things we can do during Black History Month -- and throughout the year -- is educate ourselves on the achievements of Black Americans and the important role Black people have played in this country’s history. If you love pop culture -- and of course you do! -- there's a rich history of Black Hollywood full of pivotal performances in classic films and books documenting pioneers in the entertainment industry.</p>

<h3><em><strong>Books to Read</strong></em></h3>

<p><a href="https://amzn.to/3pyqFo6" target="_blank"><em>Just as I Am: A Memoir</em>&nbsp;</a>- Cicely Tyson</p>

<p>Tyson died on Thursday, Jan. 28, just two days after the release of <em>Just as I Am: A Memoir</em>. The legendary actress broke many barriers, leaving behind an elegant legacy. Learn more about her life, her struggles and her achievements in her book.</p>

<p>This book from Donald Bogle uses interviews and personal accounts to transport readers back to the Black Hollywood of the 1920s-'50s. The book contains details on the lives and lavish homes of the likes of Hattie McDaniel, Sammy Davis, Jr. and others.</p>

<p>Released in 1958, this film stars jazz giants Nat "King" Cole, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Eartha Kitt, gospel legend Mahalia Jackson and Ruby Dee. The film is based on the life of blues pioneer W.C. Handy.</p>

<p><strong><em>Claudine</em></strong></p>

<p>This 1974 film starring Diahann Carroll and James Earl Jones was a departure from the blaxploitation films of the time, portraying the hopes, fears and frustrations of the everyday Black family. Carroll received an Academy Award nomination for her titular role.</p>

<p><strong><em>The Wiz</em>&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>Berry Gordy produced this 1978 film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play by William F. Brown. Stars include Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Nipsey Russell and James Monroe Iglehart.</p>

<p><strong><em>A Soldier's Story</em></strong></p>

<p>This multi-award-winning 1984 film adaptation of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play tells the story of a lawyer sent to investigate the murder of a Black U.S. military sergeant who was murdered in the Jim Crow South.</p>

<p><strong><em>Miss Evers' Boys</em>&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>The 1997 film about the dreadful and infamous Tuskegee experiment stars Alfre Woodard and Laurence Fishburne.</p>

<p><strong><em>Introducing Dorothy Dandridge</em></strong></p>

<p>This 1999 film starring Halle Berry is based on the life of Dorothy Dandridge, one of the first Black film stars to be nominated for an Academy Award.</p>

<p>Comedian Guy Torry's&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnoyUIwJb68" target="_blank"><em>Phat Tuesdays</em></a>&nbsp;celebrates the famed Phat Tuesdays comedy shows at L.A.'s legendary The Comedy Store that was established after the 1992 L.A. riots. The influential comedy showcase helped catapult some of the most famous Black comedians in the industry including Kym Whitley, JB Smoove, Anthony Anderson, Steve Harvey, Nick Cannon and more.</p>

<p>MTV and&nbsp;Black Hollywood power couple Angela Bassett and Courtney B.Vance’s Bassett Vance Productions teamed up to bring us&nbsp;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DAMm1Dhpac" target="_blank"><em>One Thousand Years of Slavery - The Untold Story</em></a>, a&nbsp;four-part limited series that plans to uncover the truth of a 1,000-year story of slavery all around the world. From Africa to the Caribbean and New Orleans to Istanbul, the series explores the kind of long-lasting impact that slavery has had on individuals and society.</p>

<p>The Thurgood Marshall College Fund was established in 1987 and supports Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs). The largest organization of its kind in the country, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund helps students through scholarships and other initiatives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>We were intrigued by the MYX Fitness bike and studio. Their "heart rate-based" training solutions claim to help you meet your goals by centering workouts around three&nbsp;personally calibrated heart rate zones.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>So when MYX offered us the chance to check out their MYX II Plus studio, we had to see if it lived up to the hype.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I've been hesitant to return to a gym since the COVID-19 pandemic began. So like so many people I know, I&nbsp;was in the market for an at-home gym solution.</p>

<p>For years, I've primarily done yoga supplemented with group class weight training and cardio, so I'm used to needing little more than a mat and a membership to work out. As I began shopping for a home workout studio, I was pretty overwhelmed. I&nbsp;was leaning toward an exercise bike because I loved the idea of building cycling strength and using the gym equipment I had at home, but I needed to make sure the connected app offered a wide variety of class options because I like to switch things up.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Enter the MYX Fitness studio.</p>

<p><strong>MYX Studio details:&nbsp;</strong>The MYX II Plus includes the MYX II stationary bike, a set of three hand weights, a kettle bell, a workout&nbsp;mat, a foam roller, a resistance band and a Polar OH1 heart rate monitor.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>The Price:&nbsp;</strong>The MYX II Studio is $1,599 (the bike starts at $1,399 on its own.) The Openfit app is $39 per month after a free trial period.</p>

<p><strong>Benefits:&nbsp;</strong>A variety of heart rate-based workouts designed to help you get the most out of your workouts no matter how much time you have.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>My Review:&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>I’ll admit I wasn't in the best shape when the bike arrived. The pandemic weight is real, and&nbsp;I sustained an admittedly&nbsp;clumsy knee injury a few weeks before the delivery date. (Reminder:&nbsp;Please consult your doctor before trying any new exercise routine! My physical therapy team walked me through exercises, so I felt ready to take on the MYX stationary exercise bike.) And with that, let's get into it!</p>

<p>Delivery and install were a breeze. The bike was fully assembled for me, and I got a high-level&nbsp;overview of its&nbsp;features. The standout:&nbsp;The MYX II Plus' big screen that swivels all the way around, making it easy to take classes on and off of the bike.Their cross-training classes allow you to do both in one session!&nbsp;</p>

<p>The first thing I needed to do was a calibration ride so that every workout going forward would be personalized to my three heart rate zones. This is way more than a "slow down" prompt when the monitor feels my heart rate going too high. The trainers&nbsp;guide you through each level and explain how holding steady in each one can help&nbsp;build stamina and heart health. For me, this has been a&nbsp;more sustainable way of doing cardio than I'm used to.</p>

<p>With the MYX + Openfit combo, I'm&nbsp;able to take advantage of both&nbsp;on-demand and live classes. There's not only cycling, but also yoga, barre, running, HIIT and even kickboxing. Luckily, new users get a 14-day free trial of Openfit.&nbsp;For me, two weeks was just enough&nbsp;time for me to get acquainted with the bike and begin feeling like I was gaining momentum in my fitness journey.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I've taken&nbsp;classes from a few different trainers and they all have something different to offer. My favorite so far is Dyan. She doesn't take herself too seriously, which makes me feel like I'm riding with a bud.&nbsp;</p>

<p>And while I love the funny things Dyan says, my favorite feature is the ability to turn up the music without having to increase&nbsp;the trainer’s volume too. This way I can jam out to the hip-hop and '80s music like I'm in a real studio&nbsp;during my favorite classes: Rhythm Rides.</p>

<p>I'm just shy of one month into using my MYX II Plus at-home fitness studio and I'm really enjoying having everything I need for a full workout in one corner of my room.&nbsp;</p>
