Drew Barrymore Explains How She Became 'Totally Liberated' From 'Shame' of Divorce

The talk show host has been married three times, most recently to Will Kopelman.

Drew Barrymore is reclaiming the narrative around her divorces. The 49-year-old actress and talk show host recently opened up about her new outlook on being a three-time divorcee.

Barrymore was previously married to Jeremy Thomas from 1994 to 1995, to Tom Green from 2001 to 2002, and to Will Kopelman from 2012 to 2016. She and Kopelman share daughters Olive, 11, and Frankie, 9.

"I had so much shame around divorce and for some reason something happened and I said, 'I'm no longer willing to feel this way,'" Barrymore explained on Wednesday's episode of The Drew Barrymore Show. "And it just lifted from me. And I just thought, when you get a divorce, you're saving the precious commodity we have on this planet, which is only our time."

She added of the decision to divorce, "When you're truly in a situation that isn't functioning the way that optimally it hopes and wishes to be, we accept that and we improve our quality of life by moving forward. And divorce now to me, I don't have shame around it. I'm, like, totally liberated."

The discussion happened when Barrymore was discussing Jennifer Lopez's recent music video for her new song, "Can't Get Enough," in which she plays a bride going through multiple weddings.

"J.Lo, I love you. I really appreciate you bringing empowerment to where most people go to shame," Barrymore added as a side note. "We've all been in it, so go, J.Lo."

Kopelman himself has moved on to wife Alexandra Michler, whom he married in 2021. Barrymore has been open about her dating life on her talk show, talking about several dates since her split.
