Check out the six best winter skincare trends and products to try this season — from slugging to lip masking, body lotion, hydrating cleansers and more.
Heavy Moisturizing Creams
It goes without saying that our main skincare concern during the winter is dryness. To retain our skin's moisture during the harsh winter chill, we're swapping out our lightweight moisturizers for something a little more heavy-duty. TikTokker and board-certified dermatologist Dr. Joyce Park (@teawithmd) recommends products with humectants for keeping moisture locked in and occlusives and emollients for protecting your skin's barrier.
@teawithmd Winter #skincare favorites that keep my skin hydrated despite low humidity and the heater blaring in my face. My biggest tips are to layer, look for ingredients in the categories if moisturizers emollients and occlusives, and opt for creams over gels and lotions. This deeply hydrating daily moisturizer promises to leave the skin supple and smooth. Using the brand's trademarked TFC8 (Trigger Factor Complex), the bouquet of natural ingredients, which have been optimized for skin cell renewal, soak into your skin. If that's not enough to convince you, it's also won numerous awards including the highly coveted number one spot in WWD Beauty Inc.'s The Greatest Skincare of All Time.
Lip Masks
If you've been anywhere near TikTok in the last year, you've probably seen the ultra-trendy Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. Celebs such as Kendall Jenner, Brooke Shields and Kaia Gerber all swear by the shea butter and vitamin C-infused treatment. The product is made to be applied at night to hydrate your lips while you sleep, but you can use it as a lip balm during the day for extra hydration.
While good old-fashioned Vaseline and Aquaphor are likely just as effective at hydrating your lips overnight, we can't deny how adorable lip masks are — plus the cute packaging will encourage you to apply more often. Below, we've found overnight lip treatments at every budget.
Hydrating Cleansers
While trying to prevent dry, chapped skin, we want to avoid harsh cleansers that strip your skin of any remaining moisture. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser that hydrates while removing makeup and other impurities. Look for skin-friendly ingredients: humectants such as glycerin, ceramides for maintaining your skin's barrier and and cleansing oils that melt away makeup while retaining your skin's moisture.
The CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser is a top-rated cleanser with over 80,000 five-star reviews. "I've used this for years now, it works great on aging skin (in my late 40's now)," raved one reviewer. "Most cleansers I've used either strip your skin dry or don't clean well. This one cleans thoroughly, even make up and actually ADDS moisture to your skin. I don't know how, but my skin is grateful. If you haven't tried this yet, it's worth trying."
Slugging
In the case of weird and wonderful skincare trends, slugging certainly tops the list. As with most of TikTok's viral beauty techniques though, the skincare hack falls on a spectrum. There's the extreme: see skin-tingling videos of snails crawling on people's faces for proof. And then there's the real, more achievable: smothering the face with an emollient cream (such as Vaseline) as the slimy (yet surprisingly hydrating) final step in your skincare routine.
"While slugging is trending on social media and seems like a new skincare hack, it's not a new practice," says Dr. Anar Mikailov, MD, FAAD, a board-certified dermatologist and Founder of KP Away. "Medical professionals have been recommending slugging, or applying a thin layer of an ultra-occlusive product — typically 100% petrolatum on your skin — for extremely sensitive or eczema prone skin, after surgical procedures, skin rashes, or cosmetic lasers and injections to promote skin healing."
@christxiee Finally trying slugging now that I have dry skin idk what happened this winter but I tried it with @Vaseline Brand and the result😳.. definitely doing this again #VaselinePartner#AD#Vaseline#Slugging♬ original sound - Christie X
Body Hydration
A truly great skincare routine aims to nourish all skin on the body — not just the face. During the drying winter months, your body — especially patchier areas such as knees, hands and elbows — need some extra TLC. While those with sensitive skin will want to opt for a fragrance-free lotion, a deliciously scented lotion such as Vaseline Cocoa Glow and Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Cream will encourage you to apply more often. For best results, moisturize immediately after showering to lock moisture in.
SPF Staples
Just because the days are shorter doesn't mean we can skimp on sunscreen. SPF might not be a cure-all for eliminating fine lines and wrinkles, but it does help to protect the skin from sun damage in the longterm. Besides SPF-infused moisturizers and other beauty products, a solid SPF or sunscreen is a must-have in any daily skincare routine for winter and beyond. Plus, they can double as an extra layer of moisture.
